The boys golf team traveled to The Virtues golf club on Tuesday to take part in the Newark Catholic invitational. This was a very strong and very deep field of big schools, but the boys battled all day and came away with a 13th place finish out of 20 teams in the morning wave, but finished ahead of 12 of the 17 teams that competed in the afternoon wave, with a 339 team score.
The Blazers were led by senior Kellen Laird who ended up in 10th place overall in the morning wave and 12th out of 198 golfers between both waves. Sophomore Josh Brubaker finished just behind Kellen with a 75 - good for 14th place. Sophomore Wyatt Gebhart came in at 95, senior Sawyer Davies shot 96 to round out the scoring spots, and sophomore Christian Rutan finished at 98 in the non-scoring spot.
The Blazers followed this up by hosting the first Blazer Cup at Forest Hills on Wednesday. The Blazer Cup was an 8-team bracket style tournament that used match play similar to the NCAA golf tournament. This was an extremely competitive field, but all the teams had a great day competing in the match play format.
The Blazers were beaten in their first match by Moeller 3-2. Josh Brubaker won in dominant fashion, beating his opponent 5 and 3. Christian Rutan got the other point by beating his opponent 3 and 2.
Next, the Blazers were beaten by Kalida 3-2. Josh Brubaker continued his dominance by winning 5 and 3 again. Kellen Laird got .5 points by halving his match, and Christian Rutan also halved his match for .5 points. Both those matches came down to the last hole with a missed putt that would have won their matches.
Finally the Blazers came out on the right side of the scoring when they beat Ft Loramie 4.5-.5. Josh Brubaker ended his day with a 4 and 2 win, Kellen Laird won 3 and 2, Wyatt Gebhart won his match 2 and 1, Sawyer Davies won 2 and 1, and Christian Rutan halved his match for .5 points - missing a putt that would have allowed the boys to sweep the match.
Overall it was a great day for the boys!
Wednesday also allowed three boys that weren’t going to play in the Blazer Cup to travel to Echo Hills golf course in Piqua to compete in the Newton Invite. Junior Charlie Cummings placed 4th overall with an 86, senior Aiden Rader shot 101, and senior Jackson Skinner shot 110. Jackson also won the closest to the pin on one of the par 3 holes!
The Blazers are back at it Friday afternoon in a conference quad match against Tri-Village, FM, and Dixie.
